1987/88 Season - Heineken Division 1 (South)The regionalisation of the division wasn't welcomed by everyone as it meant multiple meetings with the same teams, rather than a more diverse season. The South section was at least competitive and generally drew good crowds. The North section didn't fare too well after it became obvious it was a two-horse race between Cleveland and Trafford and attendances dropped alarmingly.
Promotion play-offs were then held between Telford Tigers (Division 1 champions) and Peterborough Pirates (who had been promoted only the previous season but had finished bottom of the Premier Division). Both teams won one game each, Pirates winning 14-12 then Tigers winning 8-7. Peterborough Pirates won 21-20 on aggregate and so remained in the Premier Division the following season. On the other end of the scale Richmond Flyers were considered so bad that the BIHA almost reconsidered its policy about not relegating teams. Aviemore Blackhawks, not surprisingly, withdrew from the league at the end of their diabolical season. Tari gained the highest number of penalty minutes over the course of the season for the Lions, amassing 91.
