Additional Comments:

The Lions continued their winning streak with a fantastic shut-out against Deeside. Elbows was the favoured penalty of this match as it was called no less than 5 times, including for Fred Sandford who received 2+10 for Elbows and Abusing an Official.

Here's what was printed in the match programme...

"Tonight we welcome in a league match our Welsh friends from their valleys to our Lee Valley and the Lions' Den. The fiery Dragons from Deeside will be out to make amends after their encounter with the Lions when we paid them a visit back in September. In a hard-fought match Lee Valley emerged the victors by one goal, the score being 9 for the Lions and 8 for the Dragons.

"The Lions are out to make their presence felt in their first season of Division 1 hockey and will be pulling out all the stops in an effort to gain two valuable points tonight. Our marksmen are certainly picking up some goals and in the six games so far played have bulged opponents' nets 54 times and conceded only 24 goals. Keep it up, lads!"

The match programme of 26/10/86 contained a "Blast from the Past" column, written by Peter Cook, in which the following was shown for this Heineken Division One game:

Lions' scorers: Bill Watson 5+2, Simon Murray 2+1, Will Fish 1+2, Geof Williams 1+2, Dave Rapley 1+1, Eddie Joseph 1+1, Ron Austin 1+1, Dave Petrie 0+1

"Lions maintained their 100% league record in convincing style, with Vesa Pennanen keeping up fine form for his first (and Lions' first) shut-out, facing 33 shots in the process.

"The game started slowly with Lions only leading 4-0 after two periods. However the game, and the Lions, sparked into action when Fred Sandford received a 2+10 for Elbows and Abuse of the Official. Lions then proceeded to rattle in a further 8 goals, the highlight being a Bill Watson hat-trick and a rink-length solo effort by Simon Murray."
