Additional Comments: An absolute trouncing of London rivals Richmond in only our second home game of the season. Although Bill Watson was the Lions' highest scorer, plenty of others got on the scoresheet: Geof Williams (1+4), Alan Sandford (1+0), Freddie Sandford (3+3), Dave Rapley (1+5), Dave Petrie (1+1), Simon Murray (2+2), Will Fish (3+0) and last but by no means least, netminder Vesa Pennanen (0+1)! Referee was Dawson, Linesmen were Harris and Milsom. Here's what was printed in the match programme... "Thanks to all the fans last week for supporting the Lions. Tonight is the second league game. The boys were away at Grimsby last night, they're hoping that they have the strength and energy left to give us a good win tonight. "The kick-off to our season with practice matches has been very successful. "You can pick up Supporters' Club membership forms from the Box Office. Remember, the quicker we receive them the quicker we can give you the benefits." The match programme of 11/10/86 contained a "Blast from the Past" column, written by Peter Cook, in which the following was shown for this Heineken Division One game: "Lions scoring: Bill Watson 4+5, Fred Sandford 3+3, Dave Rapley 2+3, Simon Murray 2+2, Will Fish 2+1, Geof Williams 1+4, Dave Petrie 1+1, Alan Sandford 1+0, Geoff Delderfield 0+1, Vesa Pennanen 0+1. "Watson kept up his scoring form, making it a 14-point weekend for him. Lions led 4-0 before Richmond's only goal from another Finnish connection, scored by Jukka Korhonen assisted by Matti Nouisianen. A six-man fight erupted towards the end of the game involving three ex-Flyers, Delderfield, Jim Gleeson and Ron Austin. Icing for the Flyers were ex-Lion Andy Nunn and to star in the following season, Steve Condren and Kelly Williams." |
