Additional Comments: Having lost to the Buffalo 1-12 and 1-13 in the 2005/06 season it was clear that the Lions would have to pull everything out of the hat in order to beat such formidable opponents on this occasion. The first period saw play that was more evenly matched than the scoreline suggested. Goals arrived at 05:29, 13:10 and 17:09 from Basingstoke Buffalo but the 3-0 lead came about more through luck than judgement. Penalty minutes were refreshingly low for both sides throughout the game. Basingstoke began to dominate play in the second period, although the Lions did well to restrict them to three further goals, the first (at 24:00) being scored on a power play. Glen Jackson took the place of Stefan Nubert in goal for the third period and the Buffalo amassed a lead of 7-0 before the Lions finally broke their silence, a blistering far-reaching shot from Romanas Fedotovas thumping the back of the net at 47:03. Confusion arose just minutes later as the goal light momentarily lit behind Glen Jackson's net. Play continued and a cracking shot from Scott Beeson led the Lions to believe their second goal had been secured. Referee Roman Eastry had other ideas, however, awarding Basingstoke's goal and disallowing the Lions', much to the home team's disappointment. Basingstoke's final goal came at 58:03 with an unassisted shot from Gary Clark. Referee was Eastry, Linesmen were Meekson and Kent. | ||
