Additional Comments: Vesa Pennanen faced 58 shots on goal from the Redskins while Gary Brine faced only 41 from the Lions. The Lions matched the Redskins during the second and third periods, so it was Lions’ slow start in the first that led to their downfall. Tony Goldstone received the highest number of penalties for the Redskins with 17 mins, while Andy Leggatt received the highest for the Lions with 9 mins. The match programme of 26/10/86 saw Mike Grafton write about this Streatham game as follows: “I’m sure all of you have noticed the improvement in our performances over the last two weeks, particularly last Sunday’s against Streatham. The team’s confidence is growing all the time as the injury problems come to an end and the lines start ‘clicking’ again. “Vesa is back to good form, the penalty shot save from Craig Melançon was very important. A goal there would have made the score 7-3 and the heads would have dropped. Instead it jolted us into action and we matched them goal-for-goal for 50 minutes, after their quick 3-0 lead, to lose 5-8, a fair result.” Ronnie Cee’s column also mentioned the Streatham game: “We don’t seem to be having any luck at the moment when it comes to Referees’ decisions. There were two very dubious decisions last week against Streatham. One where the puck slid under Gary ‘Teflon’ Brine and the goal judge put his light on but the Ref ruled it out without even consulting him. Why bother having goal judges if they’re not gonna be consulted? “The other incident was Streatham’s seventh goal where Craig Melançon clearly brought the puck down with his stick above Vesa’s head. Well, I thought this wasn’t allowed and obviously the Refs thought so too ‘cos they called it clearly in the game at least twice to my memory, but they seemed to forget all about it when Craig scored with that one. “…Just one last point from last week’s game against Streffam (sic). Did you see that banner that a Redskin fan was holding that said ‘We’re glad Craig Melançon plays for Streatham Redskins’? Well, I suggest that next time we play the Reds we have a banner saying ‘We’re REALLY glad that Gary Brine DOESN’T play for Lee Valley Lions’ – good goalie!” Officials were Kellond and Whelan. |
