Additional Comments: This was the Tigers’ first ever visit to the Den. Referee was Cotter, Linesmen unknown. No match report available for this game. However, the match programme of 19/10/86 contained a “Blast from the Past” column, written by Peter Cook, in which the following was shown for this Heineken Division One game: Lions’ Scorers: Ari Arvila 4+1, Janne Lehti 1+4, Kelly Williams 1+0, Geof Williams 1+0, Andy Leggatt 1+0, John Heneghan 0+1, Martin Bergin 0+1 “Lions’ league hopes were shattered by a one-man scoring machine. Mark Budz scored 6+4 as Tigers won the first of the season’s promotion battles more comfortably than the score suggested. “Having gone 1-3 down, Geof Williams and Ari Arvila (2) put Lions ahead 4-3. Taylor tied the game with 11 seconds left of the second period, a cruel psychological blow that finished Lions off. “Budz scored 2+3 in the next 15 minutes as Tigers moved 4-10 ahead, seven straight goals. All Lions could do in the final five minutes was reduce the margin of defeat, pulling the score back to 8-10 before Budz wrapped up the scoring, making it 9 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game (4-5 Tigers). “Highlight for the Lions: A spectacular goal by Kelly Williams, a photo of which has been used in the magazine ‘Slapshot’ many a time.” |
