Additional Comments:

Following a series of close encounters so far this season, hopes were high when the Lions faced their first clash with South London rivals, Streatham Redskins. However, the Redskins meant business right from the start, Polish Andrzej Mazlak scoring for the visitors after just four minutes. Streatham’s second goal came courtesy of Steve Paris, who played for the original Lions team back in the 90s.

Less than two minutes into the second period saw the Redskins score again, the puck trickling past an unlucky Stefan. Lee Valley then scored their first and only goal of the match at 26:01 with a shot from Tom Davis, assisted by Rich Gomes. A minute later found Stefan making a spectacular save, but the pressure from the Redskins intensified. Their goal at 36:34 was a superb team effort, perfect positioning from Slovak Peter Krsjak made the shot a certainty. A second goal relied more on luck than skill, Stefan Nubert apparently believing he had made the save.

The final period saw a continued attack from the Streatham Redskins. Netminder Stefan Nubert had received injuries to his face and neck during the game which had caused bleeding to his forehead. His frustrations boiled over and a comment to the ref meant that was the end of his time in the crease. George Alley took over for the Lions (Streatham changed netminders too) but couldn’t prevent the Redskins from scoring a total of 4 goals in what was an undisciplined final period. The Lions had no answer to the onslaught and the game ended with a scoreline of 1-9.

Man of the Match for the Lions was Gennadi Yufit, who was making his home debut for the team. “We know the tactics, we know the breakouts, we have shown that we CAN play hockey and give established teams a run for their money,” said Yufit. “We have the players to perform well and we aim to prove this when we meet Bracknell.”

Referee was Ashraff, there were no other officials.
