Additional Comments:

Once again, thanks to injuries, illness and holidays (plus a match ban for Paul O’Neill) the Lions were forced to meet their formidable opponents with only 11 players and 1 netminder. Nonetheless, past performances with a short bench proved the team was capable of rising admirably to the challenge.

The first period demonstrated this as Scott Beeson put the Lions ahead at just 02:57, Michael Ranby providing the assist. Rob Courtman was sent to the penalty box at 09:01 for hooking, leaving Lee Valley vulnerable to attack. However, it was the Lions who continued to attack the far more plentiful Streatham side and at 09:42 the home side went 2-0 up. The short-handed goal was scored by Michael Jacobs, assisted by Stas Prokofiev and Romanas Fedotovas.

Among the large Streatham squad only two players would score, hat-tricks going to both Perry Richardson and Robert Blazowski. It was Richardson who put his team on the scoresheet first, the unassisted powerplay goal scored while Rob Courtman was still in the sin bin at 10:00. Lions’ only netminder, Stefan Nubert, aggravated an existing injury during play and was clearly in pain. However, with no replacement available he valiantly continued and impressed throughout.

At the end of the first period Lee Valley were 2-1 ahead, despite all the odds. However, five minutes into the second Perry Richardson struck again and Streatham equalised. The Lions’ Ben Williams was serving the first of four penalties at the time, Richardson’s goal scored unassisted on the powerplay.

Streatham were unlucky not to have nudged further ahead in the following few minutes as the puck slid across the goal mouth without crossing the line, while another shot hit the post with a resounding clunk. However, the South Londoners finally took the lead at 34:38 with a short-handed goal from Robert Blazowski, assists from Wayne Trunchion and Ed Koral.

Koral had been warned by referee Dean Russell-Samways about the visor on his helmet. The warnings were not heeded so Koral was punished with 2-mins for illegal equipment. The Lions pounced and a long-ranging shot from Romanas Fedotovas was tipped into the top of the net by Ben Williams to equalise the score once again.

In the second period the already depleted Lions squad had endured further problems as a pounding headache forced Nicky Braithwaite to retire from the game, while Ben Williams picked up injuries that caused him to continue through gritted teeth.

The final period started and Streatham’s Sean Easton was soon sent to the sin bin for roughing. An error of judgement by the usually reliable Romanas Fedotovas allowed Perry Richardson through to score his hat-trick unassisted goal for the Redskins, short-handed again at 44:13. This was followed at 47:31 with Streatham’s first even-handed goal of the match, scored by Robert Blazowski and assisted by Wayne Trunchion and Lee Brears.

Lee Valley hit back to narrow the gap at 50:42, their fourth goal scored by new signing Stas Prokofiev and assisted by Ben Williams. Sadly, less than a minute later Streatham sealed their win with the hat-trick goal from Robert Blazowski.

Lee Valley called a time out with less than 3 minutes left on the clock and opted to pull netminder Stefan Nubert. However, Ben Williams was serving 2-mins for slashing at the time, so the extra outfield player only balanced the two teams until he was released at 59:14. Streatham failed to score on an empty net on several occasions but the Lions’ attempts to claw back an extra goal or two also proved unsuccessful.

The Lee Valley Lions may not have beaten Streatham in the end, but the standard of play from start to finish was superb. Each and every player gave 100% and put in a fantastic performance. They did themselves proud in front of a large crowd and hopefully the result will boost the confidence of the whole team. A big “well done” to everyone.

Referee was Russell-Samways, Linesmen were Lalonde and Goebel.
