“Lions crushed Bournemouth in a bad-tempered match memorable for many incidents, as Stags were hit on the rebound from Lions’ defeat against Telford the previous week.
“Lions went in after the first period 4-1 up, then moved into overdrive. In a seven minute spell the score was increased to 10-3, Geof Williams completing a rare hat-trick and Janne scoring his 2nd to 4th goals. His hat-trick marker was a slapshot from just off Vesa’s right post! Fred Sandford added one more before the interval.
“In the third period Arvila’s two completed his hat-trick and Lehti made his total a round half-dozen, with 11 minutes in the game. An already chippy clash, in which Lipsey and Delderfield had been given Roughing minors in separate incidents and Chris Leggatt received a 2+10 Butt-Ending penalty, erupted in the closing seven minutes.
“Steve Parry and Fred Sandford both visited the sin bin twice in the space of four minutes, then with 97 seconds remaining all mayhem broke loose. John Heneghan (2+5+Game) was involved in a brawl with Ramsay, Lipsey, Pete Murray (all 5+Game) and Mike Iverson (5+10+Match), the chaos continuing towards the locker room. The last period produced 95 minutes of penalties.
“Pennanen was excellent between the pipes, turning aside 51 out of 54 shots as Lions hit 62 shots on a shell-shocked Terry Ward.”
