Additional Comments:

This was probably Lions’ highest scoring game of all time! I remember it well, if only for the fact that after so long we were laughing when we scored as well as cheering – we just couldn’t believe how many we were putting past the hapless wings! Having said that, Irvine did ice with only 12 men, so it’s not surprising they were beaten. It says something, though, when the Wings’ highest scorer got 4+5 but was still on the losing team!

Mike Grafton mentioned in the match programme of 30/11/86 that this game broke various club records (the previous best being shown in brackets below):

Most goals in one game: 32 (23-3 against Birmingham in 1984)
Highest winning margin: 23 (20, as above)
Most assists: 12 – Neil Shea (10 – Ari Arvila against Deeside in 1985)
Equal most goals: 11 – Janne Lehti (11 – Ari Arvila against Blackpool in 1986)
Most points: 18 – Janne Lehti (11 – Ari Arvila against Deeside in 1985)
Most goals conceded in a league win: 9 (17-8 against Oxford, 10-8 against Slough, plus overall 12-10 against Peterborough (Challenge))

Lions switched netminder for the last period, bringing McGarvie on in place of Elliott. Lions scored a short-handed goal at 23:18 (Lehti, assisted by Williams) and a further short-handed unassisted goal at 50:30 (Chris Leggatt). We scored power play goals at 18:32 (Leggatt assisted by Shea) and 28:46 (Lehti, assisted by Leggatt and Barron) while Irvine also managed a power play goal at 51:09 (Ryan, assisted by Hiddleston and Davis).

Lions’ first goal was at 08:02 and last goal was at 58:43. Here are those who made the scoresheet: Janne Lehti 11+7, Michael Barron 6+5, Neil Shea 4+12, Chris Leggatt 3+5, Dave Petrie 2+2, Mark Nicholls 2+1, Martyn Barratt 1+1, John Heneghan 1+1, Eddie Joseph 1+0, Geoff Delderfield 1+0, Geof Williams 0+4, Ali Rodger 0+1, Danny O’Hanlon 0+1.

Janne’s goals helped bump his total goals scored for Lee Valley up to 199. All he had to do was score against Bournemouth Stags on 30th November to reach the 200 goal milestone. Janne had previously reached 100 earlier in the season, at Oxford.

Officials were Harris, Dawson and Moore.
