Additional Comments:

A close game which saw the Lions finally step up the energy in the final period to score four goals against the Flyers’ one. Quite an aggressive game, it would appear, as Neil Shea got 2+10 for Spearing at 06:29 and Chris Leggatt also got the same penalty for the same offence at 36:05 (when a Bench Minor penalty was also awarded!).

Of the Flyers nine two-mins penalties, four were for Hooking.

This game was Lions’ 50th in the Heineken League, not including the deleted games against Glasgow and Deeside the previous season. Geof Williams had iced in all 50 games and Eddie Joseph had missed just one. Janne Lehti led the scoring and assists, with 107 and 80 respectively. Second in the list of scorers was Ari Arvila with 82 and third Bill Watson with 39. For assists, Geof Williams was second with 75 and Chris Leggatt was third with 49. Eddie Joseph led with the highest number of penalty minutes – 89, with Geof Williams second on 86 and Andy Leggatt third on 75.

The match programme of 30/11/86 contained Ronnie Cee’s “Ronnie’s Roundabouts” column, where he gave the following write-up about this game:

“Hell, we sure made hard work of beating our local rivals Richmond last week. A combination of slow ice, pathetic netting and the usual standard of refereeing in this country almost contributed to our downfall.

“Only an inspired third period performance where we camped out on Richmond’s blue line saw us through, but there were a lot of worried faces on our supporters after two periods, when we trailed 2-1. This was mainly thanks to an excellent performance between the pipes from my #1-rated minder in the country, Lloyd Clifford – sorry Vesa!

“Talking about minders I think that we have found a cracker too in Russ Jackson, who had an excellend debut last weekend. He obviously has a hard act to follow, but please don’t compare him to Vesa. I’m fed up with hearing, ‘Vesa would have saved that one,’ and ‘He’s not as good as Vesa.’ Remember, the guys we have in goal now, Russ and Jamie, are both English and are not taking a valuable import place out on the ice, so give the guys a break, it will work out in our favour in the long run!”

Officials were Bramah, Lawley and Large.
