Lions Hand Chelmsford Victory in Late Flourish

The pride of East London took another late blow as the Lions squandered a 4-3 lead in the final four minutes, giving the win to an under strength Warriors side.

First Period: Neither side took control of the game early, a lot of passes and clearances went wayward and no clear cut chances were created however, it didn’t take long for a goal to come. As James Hepburn took an early interference penalty, less than ten seconds into the Chelmsford powerplay, Nick Alley overshot a clearance from his own zone sending the puck over the plexi at the opposite end which saw him receive a two minute penalty for delay of game. Chelmsford kept possession for the 5-on-3. The Lions defended well but, as Hepburn returned to the ice a shot from Steve Dunnage (3:59, assist Wilson) saw the puck squeeze past a screened Aaron Mallet and the Warriors had their powerplay goal. Lee Valley came back into the game and started to make more chances, Hepburn and Max Gerstein causing havoc in Chelmsford’s defensive end, the equaliser never came though and the period ended 1-0 to the visitors.

Second Period: The Lions came out much stronger and like Chelmsford in the first, they picked up an early goal. Theo Abban (22:39, assist Hodge) out muscled two Warriors defence-men from the corner and put the puck through Adam Young in the visitors net to tie the game. Lee Valley couldn’t make the pressure tell and shortly after, Chelmsford were back in front. A miss-communication between the Lions saw Courtney Grant score (23:14, assist Wilson and Whiting) from a 2-on-1 breakaway on a helpless Mallet. This would become a running theme in the match, as the Lions took more possession and created more chances. Ben Osbourne (27:13, assist Yufit and Fedotovas) and Richard Hodge (28:48, assist Yufit and Alley) quickly put the Lions in front and settled the team into a rhythm. The hits were started to fly too and after Hepburn nailed Richard Whiting in front of the home bench, Calum Heath missed two chances in quick succession. Despite all of the pressure being on Chelmsford, it was another miss-communication from Lee Valley the led to the equaliser. Conor Swainsbury (39:42, assist Grant) made the break and took the pass to tie the game just as the period was coming to a close, ending Lions 3-3 Warriors.

Third Period: Lee Valley were fastest out of the blocks again, holding the puck well and after Gerstein, Hepburn and Peach created some good opportunities. Theo Abban slotted in after Gerstein raced into the corner and sent the pass across to the waiting winger (43:51). Chelmsford called a time out mid way through the period and started to work their way back into the match, Lee Valley were starting to look unsure in their own end couldn’t seem to clear the puck. Jack Ball then took a tripping call late in the stanza and it only took twelve seconds of powerplay for Chelmsford to get their equaliser, Stephen Woodford (56:42, assist Dervish) tying the game at 4-4. As the clock began to wind down, both teams went looking for a winner but it was Chelmsford who got the important goal. It was deja vu for the Lions as a mid ice turnover saw another 2-on-1 break, Swainsbury (58:06, assists Staples and Grant) the recipient, putting the visitors 5-4 ahead. Lions tried desperately to equalise, Abban coming close to a hat-trick in the dying seconds but Young saved well. The game ending in disappointment again, although the improvements are starting to show.

Remembering Martin Berry…

martin-berryI’ve been informed that a minute’s silence will be held at this weekend’s game against Chelmsford, in memory of Martin Berry, Joe’s father.  Martin provided a lot of help and support to the club over the years and he sadly passed away earlier this year.

Match photos

Patrick Ayling and Beverly Irish kindly supplied me with photos from Saturday’s game against Slough, in which a presentation was also made to the family of Jordan Jones.  Steve Grout has now also allowed me to feature some of his photos, so, to avoid confusion over copyright, I’ve created two albums, which you can see here and here.  We can look forward to more photos from Pat during the course of the season. My thanks go to all three contributors.

Thanks from Jordan’s Grandfather, Denis

Saturday’s opening game of the season was dedicated to the memory of Jordan Jones and his Grandfather, Denis Jones, has written to express his thanks:

“Myself and the family would like to thank everybody at Lee Valley Lions for the wonderful tribute that you gave for Jordan, also for the support that you have given us in our sad loss.  I will of course be coming to support the team for home games whenever I can.”

Jets Strike Late to Down Plucky Lions

Hockey returned to East London for the start of the 2013/14 season and the Lions, bolstered by new recruits were feeling positive about this season’s chances. Slough (boasting former Haringey, London Racers and Slough EPL Jets sniper Zoran Kozic) who have been steady since dropping down from Division 1, had put 28 goals on the Lions over two games last year.

There was a sombre mood in the Den as former Lion, Jordan Jones (who passed away in July) was remembered in a presentation to his family.

First Period: The game started slowly as neither team created any clear cut chances with Slough taking the early possession but as the period wore on, Slough started to stretch the Lions’ defence as the hosts showed early season rust. The returning Nick Alley failed to control the puck in front of net and Richard Hodge sent a shot just over the cross bar towards the end. The period ended scoreless.

Second Period: The Lions started the period short handed but killed the Slough Powerplay (PP). Once back to full strength, the combinations started to come together with Theo Abban linking well with new line-mate Gennadi Yufit. The Lions made the first breakthrough at 36:30, when Ashlee Cave worked hard in the corner to allow Ben Osbourne to set him up in front of net, Cave scoring on his back after a short scramble. This spurred Lee Valley on and as Slough started to show fatigue, the Lions started to open up the Jets’ defence with some quick passes, Laura Saunders in the Slough goal being forced into some big saves. Despite the pressure, it was the visitors who scored next. As the Lions were on the PP, a communication break down left the home side exposed at the back as Slough captain David Print returned to the play, he made a big hit on a retreating James Gosling to set up up a 2-on-0 break away, Liam Underdown putting Kozic in to equalise at 39:36.

Third Period: Both sides began the period with men in the penalty box (Jack Ball and Nathan Darmanin, both for roughing) and Nick Alley took advantage of the extra space to skate unopposed from defence, before rifling a wrist shot from the blue line to the top corner of Saunders’ net. After that the Lions let their discipline slip away, Richard Hodge (2+2 minutes for roughing and slashing) and Slough’s Joseph Day (2+2 roughing) both sat after a short scrap. The resulting 4-on-4 saw Josh Condren equalise at 49:07 (assist Darmanin) and from there Slough pulled away. Two goals from Conor Redmond in three minutes (50:48 and 51:49, assists Kozic and Underdown) saw Slough run clear, before Kozic (short handed at 55:37, assist Condren) put the game to bed after a mid ice turnover let him go 1-on-1 with Aaron Mallet. The Lions came close to pulling a goal back but by then the momentum was with the Jets as the game ended 5-2 to the visitors.

Lee Valley can take a lot of positives from their first game back, the next game sees a young Chelmsford Warriors side visit the Den on the 21st of September. The Lions looking to pick their campaign up quickly.

Our away game at Peterborough, originally scheduled for next week has been moved to the 14th of December.
