“Dave learnt to skate when he was only five years’ old and waited just three years to pick up a stick. In his youth he played for many teams in Thunder Bay, Ontario, winning an assortment of awards such as Most Valued Player, Leading Scorer and Rookie of the Year. At the age of fourteen his team won the NW Ontario championship along with many local tournaments.

Dave attended McGill University and played for the “Redmen” for six years, winning the Most Valued Player award twice, leading the scorers on three occasions and captaining this team for one year. He was also winner of the Molson Three Star year award twice. The Redmen toured Switzerland in 1982 and 1984, and Czechoslovakia in 1985.

In 1986 he joined Groningen GIJS in the Dutch First Division, playing there for one season and was then signed by Nottingham Panthers last summer. In 24 games for the Panthers he scored 87 points, including a 6+2 return against Dundee. Dave was released at Christmas to make way for Mike Jeffrey, and sat out one month before Lions gave him that deadline-eve call.”
